WTF, Indianapolis?!? – An Introduction

May 7, 2010

Indianapolis is the 14th largest city in the United States with the 33rd largest metro area. Currently the city has two top level professional sports franchises in the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. It also supports the Indianapolis Indians of the International League (AAA baseball). Yet when it comes to hockey, Indy has a hockey team which currently plays in the USHL.  There seems to be some disparity here.

Why does Indianapolis, a city that at one point was a candidate for NHL expansion, not have a higher level (ECHL or AHL) team?

I have covered this before in a previous post, but recent research has me irate. Beginning next week, I shall explore this topic more in depth. I will explain why Indy does not have a team playing at a higher level and the reasons why given the numbers, this makes no sense.
