The Goalie Mask Turns 50

November 2, 2009

This was an interesting piece of news that I came across this weekend. Sunday was the 50th birthday of the goalie mask.

I must say as someone who occasionally plays goalie during hockey on the weekends and one who has recently taken a shot to the face, thank you Jacques Plante for such a wonderful invention. Now if I had only had the foresight to purchase one before that game last weekend…

Anyway, there were a lot of tributes and stories in honor of the mask over the weekend and I figured I’d share a few with everyone.

Puck Daddy, had a great post about how masks have changed over the course of time and their role in pop culture.

TSN also had a great article covering the first time Jacques Plante used a mask in a game.

-Finally, if you have an hour, the NHL Network recently ran a documentary about the goalie mask that covers its history and impact on the game. I highly suggest viewing this if you love hockey history.
